June 30, 2001

Mark took a trip over to the place we got the free carb, after being told to come back Wednesday. Mark asked far a non-working ryobi/IDC/ryan weedwacker. The dude went to the pits of the store, (god knows what's down there) and resurfaced with a Ryan/IDC weedwacker and a ryobi. I asked how much, and he said "just take them I don't care..." Well, I think these people have more junk than they know what to do with... I ripped the engines apart at home and began replacing parts. The ryobi was worthless, due to the short crankshaft and being fully rusted. The Ryan was exactly the same engine as our IDC, so I replaced the crankshaft and flywheel. Thanks fly out to the lawn mower dude again!

June 29, 2001

Mark couldn't get engine started again, though it was mounted in the bot. Very solid mount, worried about vibration. Sigh... hate pull string; eyeing 1 hp electric motor in lawn edger for electric start. Taking the engine back out of the bot tomorrow. Also played with very cool 3d rendering/design program, have some awesome drawings of the bot/components.

June 25, 2001

CJ and Mark went to the junk yard first thing in the morning. When we got there we went straight to the mower section. Nothing was there. We went and asked a junkyard troll where we could find them. His reply "We got rid of dem things last week." Well, nothing more to do at the junkyard... We went back to Marks and CJ looked at the engine. We decided to make a new keyway. We tried angle iron, a nail, and washers. All were grinded, then put into the engine and torn apart. CJ ran down, grabbed a heavy thick peace of steel and started grinding. He ended up with a perfect keyway. The test was on. Would the keyway take the pressure of the flywheel?? Nope. Didn't fit. So we grabbed the flywheel and sawed a bigger slot for the keyway, ignoring the label on the flywheel. We tried again, started the engine...and...and... it worked! We put the new parts on and played around with the engine all night. Sounds like a cross between a dirtbike and a snowmobile. Watch the movie.

June 24, 2001

Well... Mark is at it again... We received the new parts (remember the muffler and velocity stack?) but broke the flywheel, shredded the crankshaft, and lost the keyway.

June 21, 2001

Mark went to the mower shop to get a new carb. He picked up a new clutch bell and started looking at the carbs. He found a great one, and the mower dude let him have it for free! Thanks mower dude!

Another time in June X, 2001

The engine stopped starting. (Cool sentence.) We "tinkered" too much. Those screws must have been important. Sigh... Then, Mark broke the carb.

Also in June X, 2001

Mark tore the engine apart. While puting it back together, he found a small black rectangle (on left of pic,) but didn't know where it went so he left it out. We later found out that it must hold the fan on, as it keeps falling off. The piston, then the reassembled engine. Also is a pic of the reverse.

June X?, 2001

WOOHOO!!! We finally started the engine!!! We realized that the second wire on the alternator was the wire that was used to KILL the spark (duh! *smack to the forehead*) Anyway, we used pull string to start the engine, also found out that the fuel lines were wrong. We found a good webpage for our engine with proper fuel line setup. We got it started! it spun! Wow, big surprise there.... Anyway, we tinkered with the DO NOT TOUCH screws. We figure we knew what to do. It works better now anyway. Look at the movie of the engine running on the tree! Also, a pic of the school field (IT WASN'T US!!!)

June X, 2001

Pic of the controller!!! (cool ain't it!) We mixed bot gas(note the label)... 1:32 ratio... Its 32oz gas to 1oz additive (we were low on gas.) We tried to start the engine. We used a 12 volt electric starter. It didn't work. We were forced to use a pull string. We had trouble with the fuel lines-fuel shot out of the carb- and no spark. We tried and tried to start that engine, but we failed. It failed. Time ran out...

May XX, 2001

Played with the saws???

May 10, 2001

Sorry to everyone for the long time lapse. We were to busy working on the mortar (big, loud gun, another interesting tangent) to work on the bot. We are now starting again. We found places to mount the gas tank and the electronics. We also got the throttle servo working with the engine and controller. We made pieces to hold the wings on better. Also made the nifty, neato, and overall awesome, rad, fandamntastic Siege logo.

March 23-April 5, 2001

We mounted the reverse, and found that we need to make a new differential.

March 22, 2001

We layed out the drive train, and attached the flat iron for the back ramp.

March 5, 2001

We got the rest of the gears, and the controller.  Add another $100 to the price tag...

March 1, 2001

The parts are in.  We drilled out holes and started threading the gears.  We found the bearings to be very smooth.  We played around with the gears for a while, mounted one to the clutch.
